This guide explains how to create a "stationary" Safe. If you want to create a Portable Safe (that cbe accessed without using the program) on a CD/DVD, a USB thumb drive or an external hard disk, please use the "Portable Safe" function instead.
Create or import a Safe
You can create as many Safes as you want. To create a new Safe, click on "Create a Safe". The Safe Assistant leads you through the creation process. To import an existing Safe select "Safe" -> "Import" from the menu bar.
Working with Safes
Each one of the virtual Safe drives functions like an additional hard disk in your computer: with the difference that your data can be securely stored on it.
When one of the secure drives in the Safe program is opened, a new drive is added to your Windows Explorer. You can work with the drive just like with any other drive: you can launch programs from it, edit files, create directories etc. As soon as you save data on a secure drive it will be encrypted in real time. When you close the Safe the drive will automatically disappear from the Windows Explorer again.
Thanks to the live encryption opening and closing a secure drive is very fast: encrypt your entire drive within seconds. A Safe can have a size of up to 2 TB (NTFS file system) or 4 GB (FAT32 file system).
Dynamically growing Safes
If you create a Safe on a local NTFS drive, you will also have the option "Safe grows dynamically" during the creation of a Safe. This option allows you to create a Safe that initally only takes up a small fraction of its maximum capacity and dynamically grows as you put files into it. That way, your Safe will only use up as much storage space as it really needs and it will be created much faster than a normal Safe. When a growing Safe has reached the maximum capacity that you specified during creation, it will not grow any bigger.
Please note: You can not use growing Safes on cloud storage, they will use their full capacity in cloud storage. Growing Safes will also lose their special properties and instantly use up storage space according to their maximum capacity when they are moved or copied to a different location.
The main window of the Safe displays a list of the secure drives you have created. To open or close one of them, click on the corresponding button for the desired secure drive. You can also use a portable storage device to open the drives if you have stored your Safe password on it. You can choose between two options: the corresponding drive is automatically opened as soon as you connect, for e.g., a USB stick containing the password to your computer. Alternatively the secure drives can be opened by simply clicking on the corresponding icon of the secure drive: the program then "fetches" the password from the memory stick connected to the computer. You can, of course, also continue to enter the password manually, if, for e.g., the USB stick is not available.
Please note the following when using Steganos Safe:
- Before you close a Safe, shut down access to all files stored in the Safe. If files are still being accessed on the drive there is a possibility that it might not be closed properly and data is lost.
- Never install programs on a secure drive. These installations could be damaged if you try to run a program when your secure drive is closed and not available.
- To protect your data the secure drives will automatically be closed as soon as your computer switches to power-save mode.
